Bobby May - Head Coach

Kell High School is excited to announce the hiring of Coach Bobby May as the new Head Coach of the Kell Longhorn Football Team. Coach May joins Kell after a successful tenure as the offensive coordinator and head coach at Westlake High School, and prior to coaching at Westlake, Coach May was the Head Coach at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, Florida. As the Head Coach at Suncoast, Coach May led the Chargers to their first playoff appearance in 13 years. Upon his arrival at Westlake, Coach May immediately began building upon his tradition of positively impacting football programs. In his first year as Offensive Coordinator, Coach May led an offense that averaged 41 points per game and reached the second round of the playoffs. After taking the position of Head Coach at Westlake, the program continued to see additional success: under his guidance, Westlake won two region championships and made the playoffs every year which included appearances in the Elite 8 and Final Four. This success was due largely to Coach May’s ability to raise interest in his program and recruit from within the school and community. In just a few short years, the program almost doubled in size, adding the depth necessary for success. The combination of a vigorously growing program and superior leadership under Coach May lead to positive outcomes in both regular season and post season competition. Furthermore, under his guidance as Head Coach, 44 of his former players are currently on college football rosters, including 24 of those athletes at the Division 1 level.

Coach May was attracted to the opportunity at Kell because of its great athletic history, specifically in football, and the support that athletic programs get from the greater community and administration. As we welcomed Coach May to the Kell Family, he was quick to point out that he isn’t coming in to rebuild a program but rather revitalize a program with solid athletes and a tradition of winning and excellence already in place. From Coach May’s perspective, “it’s time to reestablish Kell as a school to be feared in the state of Georgia.”

Kell Football fans can expect to see a football program that is built around a first-class experience for our athletes. He is committed to building upon the family atmosphere already in place. Coach May prides himself on the philosophy of putting “WE” before “ME” so that players have an understanding that anything is possible when athletes understand their collective power. When asked about what fans should expect to see on the field, he explained “we are going to be disciplined, tough, and fast. We will do things the right way while having fun.” The “Big Picture” of a Bobby May Program will be understanding that players are also a key part of the community and the skills they learn from football will be evident all over the Kell Longhorn Community. To Coach May, coaching isn’t just a job but a calling and what he feels he was born to do and that his athletes should be an outward expression of that passion!

Beyond the football program itself, Coach May loves all he has heard about the Kell community and sees it as a great place for he and his wife to raise their two young children. His wife, Afton, or Mama May as players fondly refer to her, is also an educator and mother to daughter Ileigh (3.5) and son Brixon (2). Aside from football and spending time with his family, Coach May spends his time raising goats, chickens, and spending time outside with his family. His family is typically found at all of his games and other school events, and they look forward to cheering on the Longhorns.
