Derek Cook Head Coach / Quarterbacks Coach

Coach Cook enters his ninth season in 2016 at Kell as the Head Football Coach.  In 2015, Coach Cook led Kell to a fourth Region Championship, a third undefeated regular season and another Sweet Sixteen State Playoff appearance as well as final state ranking of #7.  Over the last eight seasons, Kell has a record of 78-19 with four region championships (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014) three Sweet Sixteen State Playoff appearances, two Elite Eight State Playoff appearances, and a Final Four Playoff appearance!! Kell has reached the playoffs in all eight seasons under Coach Cook.  Kell has also been undefeated during the regular season in 2010, 2013 and 2014!  Since coming to Kell in 2008, Coach Cook’s Longhorns are 44-6 record at home in the STOCKYARD! Kell has only lost three regular season home games since 2008 as well!  

In 2014, Coach Cook was named the GACA Region Coach of the Year for the 4th time.  In 2014 Coach Cook was selected as the Region Coach of the Year by his peers for the 4th time as well.  In 2013, Coach Cook was honored by the Atlanta Falcons as their Coach of the Week.  In 2013 the Longhorns were honored by the Cobb County TD Club as the Team of the Year and Coach Cook was the Coach of the Year as well. In 2012, Coach Cook was awarded the Coach of the Year for the State of Georgia by the Atlanta Area Football Officials Association for his program’s display of excellence and sportsmanship.  In 2012, he was also awarded Coach of the Year by the Sports Champions of Greater Atlanta.  

In 2013 the Longhorns finished the regular season again as undefeated region champions and ended at 13-1 with a final ranking of #3 in the state.  In 2012, the Longhorns finished the season with another region championship and a record of 10-2 and a final ranking of #5.  In 2011, the Longhorns finished 9-3 with a road victory in the first round of the playoffs over state power Marist who had not lost a home playoff game in 18 years or over the last 27 games!  The Longhorns ended the 2011 season with a #8 State Ranking.  In 2010, the Longhorns finished the season at 12-1 and Coach Cook earned both the Marietta Daily Journal and Cobb County Touchdown Club Coach of the Year honors respectively.  He was also recognized by the Touchdown Club of Atlanta as its Coach of the Week for September 27th, 2010.  In 2010 they advanced to the third round of the state playoffs and ended the season at 12-1 with the #5 ranking in AAAA football.   In 2009, Coach Cook led the Longhorns to a 6-5 finish and back to back state playoff appearances for the first time in school history. As a result, he was awarded the Corky Kell Excellence in Coaching Award given by the Cobb County Touchdown Club.  In 2008, Coach Cook led Kell to an 8-2 regular season record. Kell also made the state playoffs in 2008 for only the second time in school history. For these accomplishments, Coach Cook was recognized by the North Cobb Rotary Club as the Cobb County Football Coach of the Year for 2008.

Coach Cook began his coaching career as an assistant at Clarke Central in 1997.  He then spent three years at Cherokee High School (1998-2000) followed by four years at South Cobb High School (2001-2004), and one year at Kell as an assistant in 2005.  

Coach Cook then began his head coaching career in 2006 with the South Cobb Eagles and led them to a 7-4 record his first season as well as a trip to the state playoffs. Coach Cook spent two years as the head coach of the South Cobb Eagles before returning to Kell to become the 4th Head Coach for the Longhorns in 2008.

Coach Cook was born in Marietta in 1972. He played football and basketball at Etowah High School in Woodstock, Georgia and graduated in 1990. He then graduated from the University of Georgia in 1995 with a degree in History.  He returned to UGA and received a degree in Health and Physical Education in 1998.  Coach Cook completed his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration in 2004 and completed his Specialist Degree in Education Leadership in 2007.  

Coach Cook has been married to Courtney for 16 years and they have two children.  Chloe Mae is 13 and Cade Michael is 12.  Coach Cook would like to thank the Kell community for their support over the years and encourage all of our fans to cheer LOUD for the LONGHORNS while showing good SPORTSMANSHIP and DIGNITY!!
